Pre-Veer Group Cyclebike Ride

Good day ladies and gentlemen! As we all know, tomorrow is the big showing of Veer! I hope you will all be in attendance. The showing will begin at 8PM! But now for the fun part. Prior to the showing we would like all of you to come on a big group ride with us. Sort of Critical Mass style but not Critical Mass.

So now for the deats (hip way to say details). We all are going to meet in the parking lot BEHIND the ASU George Holmes Convocation Center on campus. Be there at or as close to 6PM as possible because we will leave very soon after! I don't want to set a course in stone so that we can go wherever we want and have the group flow and decide where to go but I was thinking generally of going down behind 321 on Faculty Drive/Winklers Creek Road and heading over to Wal-Mart and riding the Greenway and then coming back and heading to the Dragonfly. We could ride around campus before we do that though. Whatever, I'm totally open to suggestions!

Have fun with this ride! We greatly encourage the wearing of Halloween costumes/tweed/spandex/whatever! If you've got a tall bike, ride it! (if you want). This is going to be fun so come out if you can!

Also, seeing as how next Friday will be Critical Mass, I feel as if I should mention that. We have yet to organize anything really but I will talk with everyone and make another post very soon about it. Leave some comments and suggestions on here if you would like, they are greatly appreciated.

ALSO, also, next Friday is the date of the Official 2009 Halloween Alley Cat. Here is the information from there facebook page on the event:

VEER at the Dragonfly, Music too. Friends too!

Hello All,

I wanted to inform you all, if you have not yet heard, about our event on Thursday, the 22nd, 8pm at the Dragonfly Theater. We will be showing the new bicycle documentary "Veer," which is a little number about bicycling culture, especially around Portland. The movie follows 5 people involved with bikes in one way or the other, including a mini-bike performance troupe, a lobbyist, these guys who speed down big hills on kid bikes, and two local bike program advocates. Also, it is not necessarily a little number. Rather, it is full-length, and a fun film to follow. Check out the trailer at www.veerthemovie.com. Afterward, there will be music, raffles, a costume contest in the preparative spirit of Halloween, and friends to enjoy.

The charge is $5 to raise money for the BBI to help in obtaining a new shop space. We are still operative, but we have had to move out from below the Turchin Center because that space will be renovated into classrooms for ASU.We'd love to see you at the Dragonfly . No one else in NC or nearby has screened this movie, so catch it while it is here! Support our community and your local community bike program!

NC Bike Law

If anyone has stopped by Boone Bike and Touring and checked out the little classified/info table in the corner, you might have seen a postcard with spiffy graphics on it called NCBikeLaw. I'm posting a link to that site, which is an amazing resource about the laws and rights that pertain to cyclist in North Carolina, though you need to check up on local laws (Boone's Helmet Law) to make sure you don't collect tickets.

You can get a free water bottle to contain all of your thirsty needs from the NCBL website as well. Free bottles and free advice! On that note, if anyone was curious about the helmet law on campus, here is what we at BBI learned from the ASU Police: There is a law that states students must wear a helmet on campus or they might be fined, yet that rule only applies to STUDENTS and as such, the campus police do not enforce. They feel it isn't fair that faculty and staff are exempt. For your information...

Absences explained!

Hello internet. I hope the rain isn't ruining your Sunday parade or soaking the back of your shirt too bad from shredding the streets of Boone. The bike shop is quiet, and has been quiet for a while save for the hum of Quint's many electric bicycles. A majority of BBI volunteers went on a fantastical trip from Boone to the Outerbanks for a little more than a week. With tanlines fresh and having taken off our chamoises/ spandex, we return to Boone. Hey, I have a list of things that we'll give you mad respect for if you volunteer.

-Organizing and marking good vs. busted tubes and mountain vs. road tubes
-Designing a BBI shirt to screenprint
-Great ideas for fundraisers
-Tool organization ideas. Places to put all of our nuts, bolts, and whatever.
-Any other ideas?

Bike to Work Day

There is not much to say other than be ready for two up and coming extreme, Initiative events to cure the wet bum we have all been getting from riding (unless you are the lucky owner of fenders) in the dynamic weathers of Boone. We proudly present, first, a benefit dance party at the BBI shop below the Turchin Center with DJAngo Kill. The details need to be dressed up a little for that, but it is probably going to be a $5 door with a keg of some sorts, and many opportunities to physically express your bike love through your preferred method of getting down. The dance party will be on April 23rd, 10ish. Keep your ears peeled for more specific, competent details.

Second, Friday April 24th is going to be Boone's first annual Bike to Work Day! Officially, National Bike to Work Day is in May (which is a whole month of bike awareness type events), but there is no need to follow the mode of everyone else. In the morning, volunteers will be sitting out under some tents at Tupelo's and also Boone Mall, the part closest to Winkler's Creek Road, and they will be handing out free coffee and donuts to anyone commuting to school or work. After the day and the work week are over, there will be music and food at the Jones House for everyone, starting at 5:30. We'll be holding a raffle for a free bike tune-up from Magic Cycles. Hopefully there will be sunshine to share and enjoy.

Yet! We still need some help! We are still looking for a PA to mic the bands, as well as people to bring some food to the Jones House. Some will be purchased, but we would also like to make this a potluck-esque event. Also, please feel free to save the Bike to Work Day flyer and post it at your water cooler, on your bus, or in your classrooms. Also, we might need support staying awake for two days from the dance party to the Jones House.
